self-publishing

When I started working on a novel in 2009, there was already a lot of buzz about self-publishing. Problem was, I didn't know anything about it and had a mainly negative view of it (without knowing anything... so what does that tell you? Yeah.)

So I went looking around the Internet for the best-of-the-best. The Top Gun pilots of self-published novels, if you will. I wondered who was doing it? What were they writing about? What were readers saying?

The 180 titles below are on this list because at least 10 other reviewers (because remember, I didn't know anything) said the book was great. And "great" meant usually a four- or five-star review, and it didn't sound too obvious that the reviewer had given birth to the author.

Once I took the advice of the world and added them to this list, I have been reading them. I can't figure out if I should tell you about them. (It's so much easier to continue operating under the assumption that I don't know anything...) But if you pick up a book off this list, please leave a comment.

One last thing: when you click the links below and buy a book, a little jingle of change hits my "poor writer" tin cup, compliments of Amazon's and Smashwords' "affiliate" programs. At no additional cost to you. So thanks, dear Reader. Really, thanks.

(Oh, and one other last thing: the date in parens will jump you to a blog post in which I blurb about why I added the book to the list).

  1. As an indie author this seemed like a very interesting idea. As an indie author who's actually on this list this seemed like the greatest idea ever. But I'm a little confused. Are you reading these books and reviewing them or just offering up your services as a sifter of the haystack?

  2. Joseph - Thanks. I'm not reviewing them, but I guess you put it right when you said I was offering my "sifting" services! A book made it onto this list because more than a few other people reviewed it and said it was good. I'm not sure I could add more in my own review, but I wanted readers (including myself) to be able to access a list like this. Even though self-publishing has taken off, shopping for a self-published book is still difficult.

  3. One addition: I recently finished the legal thriller "The Jackpot" by David Kazzie and loved it. It was fast and smart. Fun. Wish I could read it again and not know what was coming. (Full disclosure: Kazzie is a friend and college buddy of mine, but he didn't give me the book, nor ask for a review. The bragging was up to me.) Available on Amazon, BN.com and Smashwords.

  4. I did a Google search for mentions of my novel, and found my novel, The Usurper on here. Imagine my surprise, especially since it evokes such raw emotions in people (at least on Amazon). Currently only available on Amazon until March. Thanks for including it.

  5. My Sister's Keeper by Bill Benners, listed above, has sold more than 170,000 copies as of Feb, 2012. And he's been signed by Trident Media Group.
